Time has been kind to Belhaven. Once known as Jack's Neck, Belhaven was an industrial town and home to a busy railroad. The nearby Pamlico River and Pamlico Sound made the town a convenient headquarters for lumber companies that wished to have access to inland markets. Many of the grand homes built by local industrialists in the 19th and early 20th centuries remain today in a town renowned for its festivals, including a ballyhooed July 4th celebration. More and more people with a love for quiet waterfront living are discovering Belhaven. The water still provides the town with its life's blood, though lumber is now complemented by commodities such as crab, fish and shrimp.
